			<title>House for Open Source Now Open!</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">With a tour around our new building and an afternoon full of insights into open source, Ancud IT has openend&nbsp; has opened its new head office. As &quot;House of Open Source&quot; it aims to unite open source solutions and services under one roof. Dedicating the building to open source, Ancud IT also wants to underline the growing importance of Nuremberg as open source city.  <br /><br />Our new head office is located in the old &quot;Glockenhof&quot;, an old Patrician building from the 18th century. The owner, the von Grundherr family, has now carefully renovated their ancestral home preserving the ancient walls and traditional details like the roof construction. The building now offers generous and light flooded space for employees and ideas.</p>
<p class="bodytext">For the opening ceremony, we went for hard facts instead of solemn speeches: Our open soruce partners presented chances and different aspects of enterprise open source. Thomas Lederer (Alfresco), Karsten Königstein (Intalio), Claude Beullens (Jaspersoft), Martin Lange (Talend) and Olaf Laber (Ingres) gave us a comprehensive view on how open source can change the business. Michael Nordschild (Nürnberger Initiative für Kommunikationswirtschaft) and Frank Tyroff (Department of Economic Affairs, City of Nuremberg) linked the open source community to the needs of SME business in Nuremberg. Afterwards there was great food, nice talks, and interesting people to mingle with.</p>

			<title>Open Source to be Adopted in Every Enterprise by 2009 Gartner Says</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">Next year, open source will be used in every enterprise worldwide, say Gartner analysts in a recently released study. The survey included over 250 companies and organizations all over the globe spanning various sectors of the economy. According to the survey, 85% of companies surveyed are already using open source products. The remaining 15% are planning to introduce open source within the next 12 months.</p>
<p class="bodytext">As the main reasons for adopting open source software, participants named lower total cost of ownership, slower growth of cost-prohibitive factors and easier embarkment of new IT projects. Other reasons named were to avoid the vendor lock-in and to reach a faster time to market.</p>
<p class="bodytext">Gartner also states that only 31% of respondents have coherent strategies and concepts for introducing and evaluating open source. According to the analysts, a reason for this is the assumption of open source being free of costs which is still widespread.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p class="bodytext">Liferay CEO Bryan Cheung will speak about implementing Liferay in United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development. Alexander Gundlak, Kempinski Hotels S.A., will speak about Liferays collaborative features in the Kempinski Community. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">Gartner recommends enterprises to consider open source portals as a real alternative to proprietary products. Two days ago, the research specialist published a research paper analyzing the recently announced cooperation between Sun and Liferay concerning their portal platforms. </p>
<p class="bodytext">The announcement has Gartner apparently led to reassess its sceptic perception of the open source portal market: Open source portal frameworks are worth a closer look is the core statement of the paper. One of the reasons is Liferays growing adoption by the enterprise section of the market last year. As far as Suns approach to open source is concerned, Gartner now finds it more pragmatic and serious than before. Also, with the numerous social collaboration features in its new release v. 5, Liferay is ahead of other portal competitors, even on the field of proprietary vendors.</p>
<p class="bodytext"><br />As a result from the analysis, Gartner gives enterprises the following recommendations:</p>
<p class="bodytext">&nbsp;</p><ul><li><strong>Enterprises using (Java) portals</strong> should reconsider open source alternatives for their platform. According to the paper, &quot;the open-source approach not only lowers licensing fees and enables easier access to code — it can also provide a package that is lighter-weight, has a more modern feature set that is faster to implement and, consequently, delivers a more rapid return on investment.&quot; </li><li><strong>Enterprises planning to implement a portal</strong> should consider Liferay if emphasizing social collaboration. If name-brand support is of great importance, Sun is a good option. Before the portal implementation, enterprises should start a pilot project using the Sun/Liferay platform. </li><li><strong>Enterprises with a Liferay or Sun portal</strong> should develop new portlets with the new JSR 286 specification which is close to being finalized.<br />&nbsp;</li></ul><p class="bodytext">At the beginning of the month, Liferay and Sun had announced a business and technology partnership. Sun will offer a new portal framwork that combines own developments with core elements of Liferay Portal. Liferay will integrate Sun contributions, notably standard-based technologies like the JSR 286 portlet specification. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="bodytext">Ancud IT-Beratung GmbH has completed the open source based workflow platform &quot;CAPassist&quot; for CAP Customer Advantage Program GmbH (CAP). CAP runs HappyDigits, with over 25 million customers one of the biggest customer incentive programs in Germany. &quot;CAPassist&quot; is a workflow portal that integrates the business processes between the CAP and their external suppliers such as marketing agencies and copy shops. The portal helps to make marketing campaigns significantly faster, easier, and more cost-efficient. &quot;CAPassist&quot; supports the user by providing personalized task management and context sensitive menus. It provides monitoring of the production progress by means of versionizing, automatic scheduling and document management. <br /><br />&quot;CAPassist&quot; contains the Business Intelligence application &quot;CAPbudget&quot;. &quot;CAPbudget&quot; is a tool for the management, evaluation, and analysis of marketing budgets and was implemented in only seven weeks.<br /><br />Ancud IT exclusively used open source software for developing both applications: The open source portal framework Liferay, the free workflow engine jBPM and the open source components Hibernate, JSF, Spring, POI and iText. Ancud IT decided to use open source software in order to keep the customer independent of manufacturers and maintenance, and to lower licence costs. To underscore the open source aspect of the project, CAP is planning to publish parts of the “CAPassist” source code on the internet.</p>
